2nd Post on my First Book: 1984

This novel’s mood is gloomy and dark. This story stayed dark from the beginning till the end, but mostly near the back.
This “1984” saddens me a lot. If I was to live in that world, I would not even survive one whole day. The book describes the world as a miserable and unendurable place.

I think that "1984" has a depressing mood too. I think the author made the story so gloomy because he does not want the world to become a dystopian world like "1984"'s world.
I think that "1984" is most depressing during the beginning and the end. I think Winston was happy in the middle part of the book. He was momentarily happy, even in his dystopian world, because he knew (or thought) that they were still people who rebelled against Big Brother and fought for an indivdual's freedom.

Wow David. That's deep...
However, I don't agree with what you said on this response. I don't think that the mood of 1984 is sad and gloomy throughout the whole story. There was hope towards the middle of the book when Winston met Julia, and they were doing things to revolt against the government. While I was reading the book, I thought for a while that Julia and Winston would successfully find the "Brotherhood", and successfully overcome the government.

Yes, I agree with you that this novel has very dark, depressing, and hopeless mood from the beginning to the end. Even when Winston was spending times with Julia, they couldn't have comfortable time because they were afraid that they might be watched. I can't imagine myself living in this dystopian world. If someone tells me to live in this world, I would rather die (maybe, bit exaggerated).
David~ don't you think this post is bit too short? Just my personal opinnion~ haha:]

1984 is actually a pretty bright book until the end in my opinion. The characters are actually given a chance to struggle against the main power. I think the only sad and gloomy part is when the truth comes hurling down on the main character at the very end and the main character is unable to actually stand up straight any longer.

The mood of the novel is surely dark and gloomy just like what you said. In my opinion, the author tried to suggest the surprising ending through such mood. I partially agree with the idea that the novel has some bright mood in the middle especially when Winston falls love with Julia.
